ScienceDirect New Enhancements – Accepted Manuscripts
As part of Elsevier’s commitment to provide the latest scientific research as soon as possible online, ScienceDirect will introduce a new type of Article in Press in February, 2006:
Accepted Manuscripts.
These are articles which have been accepted from the author, peer-reviewed and selected for publication by the journal editor but have yet to be edited by the production staff. They will be available for around 200 journals from February 2006, with further titles to be added throughout the year.
The new manuscripts will be available on average five days after acceptance; four-to-six weeks earlier than is currently the case. Additionally, the PDF articles will be citable using DOI (Digital Object Identifier) and searchable on title, author name and full-text.

ScienceDirect New Enhancements - MetaLib
Users can now also benefit from a new feature designed to assist users search and retrieve results from ScienceDirect. The feature is the result of a new software update released by Ex Libris, which extends MetaLib’s MetaSearch™ functionality.
In addition to ScienceDirect’s own highly popular and intuitive user interface, end users can now search through MetaLib’s integrated library portal, thereby increasing their options for finding the high-value information they need via one search query, presented in a single search result list.
This collaboration with Ex Libris signifies Elsevier’s continued commitment to providing widespread access to research literature, and comes in addition to federated search access to ScienceDirect and Scopus from Encompass, the federated search portal from Elsevier’s Endeavor.

ScienceDirect New Enhancements - RefWorks Integration
ScienceDirect will also extend its various export options and enable the export of bibliographic data to RefWorks, the market-leading, web-based reference management tool from Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA).
From February 12, 2006, users will be able to export selected data directly to RefWorks, which opens a web browser interface immediately on clicking the “Export” link. The advantage over current reference management desk-top applications is that users will be able to move seamlessly between the two web-based systems, making it much easier to update and manage their own collections of references.
This new functionality extends the current partnership between Elsevier and CSA. Full integration already exists for Scopus, Elsevier’s leading abstract and citation database.

Italian library makes full use of new books payment model
The University of Rome (Tor Vergata), the second largest university in Rome, has decided to purchase the entire ScienceDirect E-Book package, including all reference works, handbook series and book series packages.
As part of an effort to fully develop its digital library project, the university chose to make use of the recently introduced "Upfront Payment option" where possible (all reference work and handbook series titles).
The library director is delighted with the choice because of the enormous amount of content the university now has available on the familiar ScienceDirect platform, allowing researchers to search seamlessly across journals and books, reaching the information they need at once.
"Buying upfront guarantees the property of the purchased content," says Mr Mazzitelli, Biomedical Library Director at Tor Vergata. "This is very important in an era where the library must become familiar with most of its content being electronic."
