Approaching nine million articles

The nine millionth article will be loaded on ScienceDirect in the coming days. Since launch in 1999, there have been approximately on average two articles added every minute. You can find the daily updated article count at the top of the Browse box on the left of the ScienceDirect homepage.
Once the nine millionth article has been published, we will interview the author to find out, among other things, how electronic publishing has affected his/her working life. The interview will be made available externally shortly thereafter.

eBooks Collection 2008 launched

The eBooks Collection 2008 was launched on May 20. Of the 440 titles in the catalogue, 200 are still awaiting publication. The titles are arranged in 19 subject areas. Offering comprehensive coverage of the full range of scientific disciplines, including those published under the renowned Pergamon and Academic Press imprints, over 4,400 books are now fully integrated with the existing books and journals on ScienceDirect.

Book Series Backfiles on ScienceDirect

On May 30, the complete Backfiles of 63 Elsevier Book Series went live on ScienceDirect. In total, 2,700 volumes are covered going right back to Volume 1 of each Book Series.

Ten new Book Series titles have also been launched on ScienceDirect.

For more information see the ScienceDirect Info site.

Coming in Q4 - first online-only MRWs from S&T Books

In addition to x-Pharm, Elsevier S&T Books' first online-only Major Reference Work, which was launched on ScienceDirect in January, two more e-only Major Reference Works will be made available exclusively on ScienceDirect this year. The Encyclopedia of Neurosciences and the Encyclopedia of Ocean Sciences 2nd Edition are scheduled to be released in October and November 2008 respectively.

Copyright permissions for Book content enabled through ScienceDirect

Subscribers can order copyright permissions for all of the books on ScienceDirect directly through the platform now that Rightslink® has been selected for online copyright permissions.

“Last year, we selected Rightslink to license more than 2,500 Elsevier journals,” said Helen Gainford, Elsevier’s Director of Global Rights. “We were impressed with how it improved customer responsiveness and accelerated turn-around times for copyright permissions. Our customers readily accepted it, and the application is handling thousands of copyright permissions every month.”

CCC’s Rightslink service has firmly established itself as the de facto industry standard among major publishers for online rights and permissions. Publishers using Rightslink significantly increase their rights and permissions revenues while saving on handling and transaction costs.

Three leading journals added to ScienceDirect in response to customer demand

Three National Kidney Foundation (NKF) Journals - American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Advances in Chronic Kidney Disease, and Journal of Renal Nutrition - became available on ScienceDirect on April 1, 2008. It is the first time that they have been made widely available to institutions via IP address on a robust, reliable electronic platform.

American Journal of Kidney Diseases is the NKF’s flagship journal. It is recognized worldwide as a leader in clinical nephrology content.

Each topic-based issue of Advances in Chronic Kidney Disease provides in-depth, scholarly review articles about the care and management of persons with early kidney disease and kidney failure, as well as those at risk for kidney disease.

Journal of Renal Nutrition is the only journal devoted exclusively to renal nutrition science and renal dietetics.

In order to allow introduction of this new offering to the marketplace, full-text access to the journals on the platform will remain open and free until September 1, 2008.

Scirus appoints Topic Pages subject editors

The Scirus team is in the process at appointing 12 subject editors to moderate and advise on the evolution of the Topic Pages ecosystem.

Biographical details for the first three Topic Pages subject editors are available on the Scirus Info site. Biographies on the others will be added in the coming weeks.

Scirus Topic Pages development

Scirus Topic Pages is quickly becoming a topic-centered communication and collaboration platform for scientists. During the latest development period, support for the following features was implemented:

  • Author/member comments will appear in their personal profiles - Each author and each member has a personal profile page, with information on their research interests, their affiliation and possibly a picture. As it is now possible to comment on Topic Pages, the comments that an author or a member makes on any Topic Page will be visible on this personal profile page as well.

  • Subject classification - Authors are asked to give their Topic Page a subject classification. In a later stage it will become possible to search on Topic Pages in a particular subject area, and this is the first step towards that. The classification also allows people to subscribe to an RSS feed per subject area (see next item).

  • RSS feed of Topic Pages - It is now possible to be kept up to date with all the new Topic Pages that are published by subscribing to the RSS feed. It is possible to subscribe to updates in all subject areas or a particular subject area.

  • Publication list on profile page using Scopus ID - The publication list of an author or member can now be easily added to their public profile page by using their Scopus ID. As the Scopus ID is stored, the publication list will be kept up to date with any new publications by the author or member.

For more information on Scirus Topic Pages see the Scirus Info site.
